5th Grade Curriculum

Religion

  • Apply Christian principles to interpersonal relations.
  • Understand the history of the Church.
  • Use appropriate resources to plan and participate in liturgies and prayer experiences in order to express personal and communal spirituality.
  • Understand the Seven Sacraments and their importance in our lives.
  • Engage in service to the community in response to the Gospel call.
  • Exercise responsible stewardship.
  • Retell and apply Scripture to life experiences.
  • Understand your role as an evangelist.

Language Arts

  • Be able to advance vocabulary and reading rate with recreational reading and study of all subjects.
  • Be able to skim and scan and read for meaning and for inference.
  • Be able to write a variety of letters, poetry, and multiple paragraph themes about a single topic.
  • Be able to deliver complete and structured presentations.
  • Be able to listen and view to summarize, to ask clarifying questions, and to learn.

Math

  • Be able to read, write, and estimate whole numbers through nine digits and decimals to thousandths.
  • Be able to multiply using three-digit numbers.
  • Be able to divide using two-digit divisors.
  • Be able to work with metric units and geometry.           
  • Be able to add/subtract fractions with like denominators and multiply/divide.
  • Be able to compare and order integers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Understand and be able to apply +, -, x, รท to decimals to thousandths.
  • Be able to estimate and calculate averages and percentages and know about ratios.

Science

  • Understand that the cell is the basic unit of life.
  • Be able to classify and identify living organisms using their characteristics.
  • Understand motion and speed.        
  • Understand the building blocks of matter.
  • Understand the earth's surface and changes which affect it.
  • Understand various forms of energy (fossil, wind, nuclear, and geothermal).
  • Understand the wasteful use of natural resources, conservation, pollution (of air, land and water) and pollution reduction.
  • Be able to use the physical properties and chemical composition to classify rocks and minerals.        
  • Understand the scientific process through a science fair project.
  • Be able to identify the path of the respiratory system. 

 

Social Studies

  • Understand the life of the first Americans.
  • Understand key influences in United States history.
  • Possess a mental timeline of key influences on United States history.
  • Be able to use visual skills to help you in understanding United States history.

Technology

  • Understand and be able to properly use the keyboard.
  • Understand basic computer operations.
  • Be able to use a word processing program
  • Be able to use hardware and software safely and properly.

 

Art

  • Be able to use the elements and principles of art to analyze and make creative products.
  • Be able to use a wide variety of art materials to create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art.
  • Appreciate the many kinds of art made around the world and appreciate major American artists.
  • Be able to explain how art is connected to other subjects.

Music

  • Melody/Harmony: Understand the relationship of note placement on the grand staff and be able to play the recorder.
  • Rhythm: Understand note values and their corresponding rests.
  • Form: Understand musical form, especially the chaconne.
  • History/Style: Possess a basic knowledge and appreciation of American music
  • Audience/Performance
  • Skills: Be able to take care of equipment, be a good audience, and be a good group member

German

  • Be able to greet people in German.
  • Be able to imitate language sounds in German.
  • Be able to respond to basic questions and classroom directions in German.
  • Be able to use simple sentences.
  • Be able to watch and listen for main ideas and details.
  • Possess basic knowledge of German culture.
  • Understand basic structures of German and be able to use them in the present tense.

 

Physical Education

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills which better enable and/or improve participation in group and team sports and recreational activities.
  • Be able to increase muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, body awareness, and agility through fitness and recreational activities.
