6th Grade Curriculum

Religion

  • Be able to read, interpret, and apply Scripture to life.
  • Understand the roots of Christianity.
  • Identify the relationship between faith and culture.
  • Engage in community service in response to God’s call.
  • Use appropriate resources for prayer and plan meaningful liturgies and prayer services.

 

Language Arts

  • Increase vocabulary and reading rate.
  • Read for meaning and to evaluate, interpret, and draw conclusions.
  • Write quality stories, descriptions, and reports.
  • Be able to present interpretations and evaluations in groups and alone.
  • Process verbal information and critically analyze speeches.

Math

  • Use standard and metric units of measure.
  • Compare and order integers.
  • Integrate the use of the four operations with whole and decimal numbers in estimating and finding actual answers.        
  • Estimate and calculate averages and percentages and define ratios and proportions.
  • Possess a basic understanding of the four operations with fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Calculate the linear dimensions of polygons and the area of squares, rectangles, and triangles.
    Solve basic algebraic equations.
  • Possess an understanding of graphs.
  • Possess a basic understanding of the four operations with integers.
  • Solve problems using order of operations.

Science

  • Understand the relationship between the various bodies in the universe.
  • Understand the earth’s physical changes that take place over time.
  • Understand human body growth and body systems.
  • Understand ocean life and its development.      

 

Social Studies

  • Understand key influences which shaped and still shape the world.
  • Possess a mental timeline of world and Minnesota history.
  • Possess a mental map of the world and of Minnesota.
  • Understand key influences which shaped and still shape Minnesota.

Technology

  • Properly use the keyboard.
    Understand basic computer operations.
  • Use a word processing  program.
  • Be able to use a computer as an educational tool.
  • Use software safely and properly.
  • Be a responsible computer user.

 

Art

  • Combine the elements and principles of art to make creative two- and three-dimensional products which have purpose and aesthetic appeal.
  • Possess an understanding of theme, style, and technique.
  • Create unique and personally expressive creative products.
  • Be familiar with art-based career choices.

Music

  • Use the components of music in an expressive performance.
  • Understand the composition of a choir.
  • Identify key signatures in treble clef, major scale, and major triads.
  • Understand the function of time signature, note values in simple meter and musical phrase forms.

German

  • Greet people in different situations in German.
  • Imitate language sounds in German.
  • Respond to basic questions and classroom directions in German.
  • Use simple sentences.
  • Watch and listen for main ideas and details.
  • Possess basic knowledge of German culture.
  • Understand basic structures of German  and be able to use them in the present tense.
  • Ask and answer questions of personal information and everyday functions and respond verbally and in action to classroom directions and instructional vocabulary.

Physical Education

  • Show knowledge and skills which enable participation in group and team sports.
  • Increase muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, body awareness, and agility through fitness and recreational activities.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills which enable participation in individual and recreational activities.
